The other one...
I knew I had to take Petroleum Engineering Degree
I'm just a mechanical...the worst paid.
And if you consider I'm italian...I let you imagine!

"Mean" salaries are meaningless.

I loved working in Italy, but that was back in the late 70s
You say right "70s"!
Now here the economic situation is getting worse. Italy and Spain are near to the economical situation of Greece.
In Italy the Companies have not enough money to invest in research and development.
Where had you been in Italy?
There's a pervasive culture of helplessness and hopelessness in Italy that's significantly different from reality. People would rather throw their hands up in the air and talk about how useless it is to try than to actually ever bother trying.
That, and there's nothing more Italian than hating Italy.
Anyway, wages for entry-level engineers are certainly low here compared to other countries but I think experienced workers tend to earn more or less what they would elsewhere.
As for the article: it's no surprise that highly-specialized fields have higher mean incomes given that the titles tend to change as the person becomes a specialist in his field.

One needs to also take into the consideration the Cost Of Living (COL) etc. I read recently where Australia is one of the highest COL places on the planet, also wages are much higher compared to many other places. Living in in Italy has to be worth a dive in salary of at least $20K per year.
@Pier:
I was based in the UK and did contact engineering in a lot of places throughout Europe. I gotta say, I would go back and live in Italy in a heart beat. Loved the food, the people, the food, the attitude to life rather than work, the food, the people.
Did some work with Ducati, still have a picture of my much loved Milli MHR hanging over the fireplace in the living room. Mostly the rest of the work there was just step-in short term jobs for small engineering companies in Rome and Napoli. Could not wait to get out of Rome. Could not wait to get back to Napoli! Skied in Sauze d'Oulx.
My first great claim to Italian assimilation was when I went into a hardware store and ordered a tube of glue, all in stilted Italian. The first full sentence in Italian I ever spoke. Loved getting bread and cake in place of small change. Stop it! Stop it ! Gonna well up any minute...
Not really. Living and working in a country for an extended period of time is significantly different from being on vacation there or doing short-term projects.
Don't know why you'd enjoy being in Naples, either. Possibly the worst place in the country.
The grass is always greener on the other side.

Hi Kelly,
thanks for your "interpretation"
Reminds me of my time at Toyota helping with some major installation projects. I'm trying to explain the phrase "piece of cake" to the Japanese engineers. Imagine the confused faces.
