Tolerances in Reference Dimension?

WE are having a debates on whether we can use tolerances in a reference dimension? (3.450 +/- .005)?

I'm using the ASME standard

Yes, you can. There is wording that some folks interpret as to not include tolerances in reference dimensions but you can.

See: ASME 14.5-2009, para. 1.3.17.1. The thing about reference dimensions is that the feature or part cannot be accepted or rejected due to an out of tolerance reference dimension.

Be aware that the standard discourages the use of reference dimensions - which I would say use all the reference dimensions that makes sense or helps manufacturing to get their job done..
