This morning during a reassembly a mechanic asked me to calculate the torque value for a M80 stud that bottoms in a blind hole. These studs are threaded into the blind hole and then hydraulically tensioned after assembly. In my view, there is no need to do anymore than bottom the studs by hand, but he insists that there is a required torque for the stud seat based on his experience with rebuilding large ship engines. I have no experience with this, but the only things I can find say to run them in by hand and some even say to bottom and then turn back a 1/4 turn. If you are applying the proper tension after assembly, I just can't see the point.
Stud installations usually do not require any kind of torque - hand tight only. There might be thread locker applied to the top threads but that's it.
I would contact or review the OEM installation instructions on this engine to verify the procedure.
