    Building electrical exercise bike

    Hi guys,

    If any question like this was asked before, sorry. We intend to build an exercise bike with a brushless motor. Anyone will be able to adjust the difficulty of bike. It could be easier or harder to cycle.

    We think, a 300-350W brushless motor is a good choice. What other parts we will need?

    Just off the top of my head, a seat? Maybe a support frame? Oh, and maybe pedals? Just razzing you. That's a pretty open-ended question! You'll get a better response if you bring more to the table, like a preliminary design with just a few very specific questions.

    Are thinking of using the motor to provide the resistance against the cyclist or to round up stray cats? Break the Coulomb barrier?

    I know it's called a Design Brief but that was just plain abrupt! Little bit more info required please.

    So the motor powers a pump for the water jets? How are you going to provide the resistance against the rider? Is everything going to be controlled electronically or mechanically or a bit of both? Where will it be intended for use, home or hydrotherapy centre?

    These are some questions you'll need to decide on if only for the cost implications. As it stands, you need a bike and a bathtub.

    You will need to size the Brushless motor appropriately and then develop electronics that will reverse the polarity applied to the windings to create resistance to rotation instead of rotation.

    You could just run the motor leads to a rheostat of sufficient wattage and connect them together.

    (try turning motor with leads shorted together)

    I'd go with a larger motor (700w -1.5KW)
