Simply Compression and Tension experienced on piston problem.

I have a piston in which I'm having trouble deciding which side experiences compression and which experiences tension.

Please look at the picture attached. I have layed out what I think on the picture.

When fluid comes in from the left side it will cause the piston to experience compression and cause it to extend.

When fluid comes in from the right side it will cause the piston to experience tension and cause it to retract.

Or is it the other way around?

Basically this represents some kind of actuator.
