I'm trying to describe the mechanics of a system that behaves like this:

I have many more examples, but this one shows the basic behavior. It seems to behave somewhat like a monofilament in a fluid flow. The forces at work seem to resemble Lift and Tension.
If you encountered a system that evolved in this way, how would you go about describing that evolution in terms of its current state?
