I'm working on a school project that requires a damper of variable circumference. I'm thinking something like an iris with an actuating plate to rotate blades, but where the blades maintain a circle on the outside while changing the circumference. Anyone seen anything like this or have suggestions where to look for further research?

Deciding what the design should be and how to accomplish it is not the best approach. A bit more information on your basic damping requirement might result in better suggestions or examples for your damper.
