We encounter situations where we must cast lugs out of white irons. These are incredibly brittle materials.
Can anyone provide guidance on design of brittle cast materials as lifting points?
Any documents or standards related to this would be greatly appreciated.

My experience with white iron is with impellers. These generally do not have any lifting lugs and so we generally choke the part with a sling. Same goes for Cast Iron pump casings in general as well. Sometimes the casting has a lug underneath to keep the sling in the correct lifting position when cradling the part. Without knowing the shape of the component, or its weight it is difficult for me to make suggestions. Some components I have seen with tapped holes allowing you to fit a rated eyebolt to it. Provided your thread is sufficiently deep to keep the stresses low in the white iron.
