    Compressive Strength of Steel Pipe

    Does anybody know the material properties of various types of steel piping? Looking for the yield stresses for seamless carbon or stainless pipes.

    Looking for this to calculate hoop stress.

    Do you know the standard(s) which the piping in question is? I'd start there.

    Kelly,

    No sir, not really following any particular design code. I'm trying to calculate the compressive stresses that a drum barrel will incur when being wound tightly like a winch drum with synthetic or wire rope. I found a formula from a DnV reference book but it just says that the stresses cant exceed 85% of the material yield stress. Having trouble finding the material yield stresses for 18" pipe at various schedules and material types. But I need it to be fairly high.

    I would assume the wimpy-est carbon steel you can find then FOS it at like 2x

    Yield strength is a function of the material, not the size.
