Equations to determine stress area for screw threads: reference Machinery's Handbook (Edition 24, page 1325)
For steels of up to 100,000 psi ultimate tensile strength:
A = .7854(D-.9743/n)^2; where A=tensile stress area of screw thread, D=basic major diameter of thread, n=number of threads per inch
For steels of over 100,000 psi ultimate tensile strength:
A = 3.1416((Emin/2)-(0.16238/n))^2; where Emin=minimum pitch diameter of external thread, all other symbols remain same as above
