Actually, we are not really thinking of
the weakness of the start thread but the
ability to start a thread without chance of
cross threading or messing up the first thread,
and with less fouling or gaulding.
Some require the removal of the first half thread.
I require removal of enough thread to leave a full
thread in a 'thread block'. The amount will
depend on the pitch and amount of chamfer leading
into the thread. This is most common in aircraft
or where the parts will be removed and assy. over
and over again.
