You can purchase 4130, 4140, 4340 etc as HT
for example you can ask for 4130 HT, comes
already heat treated to around 38R C.
this is about what many guns are. It is
pretty tuff... also Thompson Shafting..
it is exactly for your need, but is hard to
do additional machine work on. Thompson is
outside hardened, .. scratching my head..
it has been a while on that one. really good
stuff!!!!
