Hello, I am a final year student from Nanyang Technological University Singapore. I am doing a final year project on the tensile area of bolts under tensile stress.. the widely quoted formula to calculate the theorectical area ( average of the pitch dia.etc )is based on statistical data obtained in the lab. ( done by Slaughter in the 1930s ).
I wonder if anyone knows the reasons for such a behaviour?
most books seems to accept it without giving additional information as to why it is it so..
thanks
