A good material for this, if you can use a straight
one diamenter bar, is Thompson Shafting, ( is available
many places, keyed and ready to use, in several dia.).
If you really want to assure a no failure future
try 15-5 stainless heat treated to about 40/45 KSI,
this would have to be centerless ground as the
15-5 rough turned bar would warp a fair percent
during HT process. 15-5 is a bit harder to find.

in long term, failure free performance.
