Hi,

Before you start designing a gear box, you should know the input and output requirements, such as,
- application, ex: machine tools
- input and No. of output shafts speeds, power and positions (speed ratio)
- power to be transmitted
- allowable space, etc.
Then you have to decide,
- type of gear pairs to be used
- No. of step-downs, or step-ups
- No. of levels of gears (widthwise)
- bearing sizes
- kinametics (gear train)
- lubrication provision
- accuracy required
- development of kinametics (gear train) showing cross-section views
- check for strengths, life etc
- check for assy./dis-assy. easiness etc.

You will have to consider everything depending on the application. It is difficult to list down the steps to be followed.
