Hi guys, first post here. I am trying to collect ideas for a senior design project for school. I am entering my senior year this fall. The project will be an individual project. My areas of interest are; internal combustion engines, alternative energy sources, alternative fuels, automation, machine design. I have several ideas so far, I just want to expand my list for a broader range of choices. Do you guys have any suggestions, or know of any tough engineering problems or tasks that need solved? Thanks! |

KOOL..
great way to start... Welcome aboard. I need you (and others like you) to work on figuring out ways to get hygrogen from water in volume and inexpensively ... "they" say if you can shave aluminum under water it will produce hydrogen when it oxodizes. ...hint.. hint.. so a little lathe or mill under water that shaves aluminum billet with the power of the transmission... ??? First will it actually produce our beloved hydrogen? enough? My thought is a tiny lathe shaving aluminum under water in a clear container that captures the hydrogen bubbles and powers something with the hydrogen would sweep the points. ... AND what a fine demo lab it would make for the school's future students. Batterys.... batterys... hey something different already that doesn't have such a huge anti-green foot print and weigh so darn much. .. I'm thinking any "fresh & GREEN" idea with proof of some future development would bring top points for a project if presented well. Hmmm shaving aluminum under water. I have never heard that one, but it is very interesting. I will have to look more into it. So far, the two ways I have heard of obtaining hydrogen are from electrolysis and a chemical reaction with a metal. I believe it was a professor at Purdue that did this by using an aluminum and gallium alloy. |

The theory goes that aluminum oxidizes upon contact with air and unless it is anodided or something raw aluminum is always coated with oixdation. So if you can remove the oxide layer under water it would (instantly) take the ox atom away and leave the hydrogen atoms loose to bubble to the top for collection.
....????? I haven't tried it... I keep saying I am going to try it, but find my days full of other similar but more foolish diversions. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |

Just wanted to update you guys. I did submit the hydrogen ICE idea to faculty. They approved it, but with some changes. Instead of actually extracting the hydrogen from water, they want me to use pressurized hydrogen "off the shelf" and focus more on the performance characteristics of the ICE (before vs after hydrogen.) Overall, I am happy with it. I have a strong interest in alternative fuels so this fits my interests well. Thanks again guys! |

Wow, that was actually my first choice; powering a small ICE by hydrogen power. I still plan on submitting it as one of my proposals. Problem with some of the faculty I have talked to is the fact that we would need a chemical engineering student to participate as well, so I am working on trying to find one. |

Hi....Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your upcoming Senior year. You've listed some great projects. You'd be my hero if you'd tackle alternative energy sources. You're going to get some great feedback from the folks here...be sure to take it all in. Best of luck!! Marky

I just finished my senior year in May at Texas Tech. My senior project, which was really more like a Junior and Senior year project was installing a hydrogen fuel cell into a chevy equinox that was competing in the ChallengeX competition.
Other classmates had things like the following: 1. Designing of a ski-mountain bike. A full suspension mountain bike outfitted with snow skiis.

That sounds like a neat project. I was reading about that project sponsered by GM, I believe. Alternative fuels, especially hydrogen interest me. I am working on a proposal for a hydrogen ICE project, but am currently trying to gather a student from Chem Eng dept to help out, as I was told I would need one. |

I am building a wire edm which uses a 20 micron tungsten filament for a professor who is slicing up germanium for solar panel research. I wanted something manufacturing related because all of my work experience to date is with hands on manufacturing- running / programming cnc mills and such. |
