I am designing a new shell for a crew team. The team currently uses honeycombed fiberglass, a design I wish to improve upon. The new shell must be extremely light, must be strong (can take some bumps and not dent), and must be so stiff that over the entire length of the boat (65 feet) it won't bend more than an inch or two. I am thinking possibly using fiberglass as a shell with carbon fiber honeycomb inside to provide support. Any help is appreciated, thanks! |

Is this a college design project for you, or are you trying to venture into the business of rowing shell manufacturing and design? Reason being, Vespoli, Pocock, Resolute, Empacher, et al, all have pretty darn good designs that would be What brand/model boat is your crew currently rowing? A common current design is to still use the honeycomb core, but instead of fiberglass on the outside they use carbon fiber. If you are going to do a full-out fea analysis of the hull, with CFD & water-channel (like a wind tunnel for boats) testing and analysis of hull shape, and you're willing to do it for free, then one of those companies might be willing to help you out, as a student, etc. My best friend just quit his job as manufacturing floor manager at Vespoli. Otherwise I'd put you in touch with him! (sorry...) -Kieran (5-seat, cal-Irvine mens crew '92-'96) Modified by Administrator at Mon, May 19, 2003, 17:28:42 |

You may want to consider the Hexcel <snip> for material specifications - <snip> You want to consider a carbon fiber shell, as well as, honeycomb. Consider also the thermal expansion coefficients of each material. You will find a great selection of materials, from prepreg cloths to honeycomb to adhesives, etc.. Their engineers may also provide some good recommendations. Good Luck, Jesse

I'm doing my final project to graduate in naval arch & marine eng. in Italy. I'm designing a parent rowing shell in order to obtain a group of models and then analyse the pressure fields around the hulls using cfd..the problem is that I couldn't find any design of plan, profile and cross section so it's really complicated as I'm doing it first on paper! I'v also sent a few emails to Filippi, Hudson etc etc but they wouldn't reply..
Do any of you have such designs, it'd be much easier to do it having the cross section! I'd really appreciate any help.. Giulia |
