I WANT TO DESIGN A PLATFORM TO BE ATTCHED TO THE BACK OF MY BOAT TO HOLD A SMALL 8' LONG DINGHY WITH A 5 HP MOTOR. I PLAN ON USING TWO SQUARE ALUMINUM TUBES (2" SQUARE) COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE BACK OF THE PLATFORM THAT IS ATTACHED TO THE BACK OF MY BOAT. THE TUBES WILL BE BOLTED TO BE PLATFORM AND EXTEND OUT 4' WITH A CROSS TUBE 3' LONG ATTACHING THE TWO TUBES. HOW THICK MUST THE TUBE WALLS BE (1\4",3\8", 1/2") TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THE DINGHY AND ENGINE? THE TWO WILL WEIGHT APPROXIMATELY 150 LBS. OR SHOULD I USE STAINLESS STEEL. MY BOAT WILL BE IN SALT WATER. THANKS. DON MANGRUM |

Stainless is always better than Aluminum in a salt environment. Two simple cantileverd structures like: |--------
The angled bar will give you the stability you need on each support. Go with the 1/2 stainless to be sure. Proof load or test load by hanging on each support individually assuming you weight 150lbs or more. Don't forget the mounting points on your boat. What is the boat anyway? not the dinghy... I did a search for "dinghy davits" and found several systems on the market. You may want to look at them in case they are better, less expensive, or simply have some good ideas to use. One clever idea I viewed would tow the dinghy or flip it up and carry it on the back of a sail boat. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |
