What a great forum, I am glad to join you.
I have a problem which is as follows.
If i have a ground driven wheel connected to a manually variable hydraulic swash plate axial piston pump can i drive an auger with a fixed swash plate axial piston motor at a set reduced ratio regardless of wheel speed.
Eg pump speed ranging from 2 rpm to 50 rpm to give a constant reduction of the auger speed proportional to the pump speed depending on where i set the pump swash plate.
No external power sourse available for charge pumps etc, would the axial piston pump charge by gravity from a header tank mounted above the pump. If not can any body suggest another hydraulic combination to achieve the result.
I could solve this with sprokets and chains, gearboxes etc but would be clumbersome.

Thank you for any input. The loading on the auger is minimal so i am envisaging small pumps and motors.

Most charge pumps are mounted "piggyback" onto the main axial piston pump so no other drive would be needed. The hydraulic pump and motor piped directly to one another is known as a
"closed loop or closed circuit". Operating a hydraulic motor by means of a directional control valve is "open loop or open circuit" and it is quite common in industrial applications and yes gravity should supply your pump if the tank and suction pipe are sized properly. Your main problem will be finding a pump that will operate efficiently at that low RPM. My gut feeling would be to go with the chains or belt drive.

Good luck,
Maytag

Thanks Maytag,
I will try Saeur Danfoss customer support to see if they have a suitable pump.
Best regards

You might look at the Eaton product line-not knowing the load everything is a WAG. Eaton products are used on a lot of smaller closed loop applications i.e. commercial mowing equipment, street sweepers.
