I'm a 3rd year engineering student who recently started a summer internship with a company, helping them expand their QC lab. They aquired a used tensile test machine, an MTS synergie 100. My first task was to link the machine to a PC running XP and load the test software. The problem is, the software that was sent with the used machine is testworks v3.09, its so old the manual mentions DOS. Secondly, no gpib connector or pci card was supplied for the connection and the pc doesnt have a 488 slot. So here are my questions, can I use a gpib to usb cable to connect to the pc? Will the old testworks even run on xp? The only snag I can see with using a usb connection is that it wont be able to run through the "security activator", a device which Im assuming just rewires the pins and moves the clock around. If anyone can provide any insight on this please help, I consider myself an educated engineering student but I'm quickly beginning to look stupid. Thanks.

I have one real suggestion.. Contact your engineering section at your school.. or Texas A&M, or the U of North Texas.. use their web sites to see if you can get in touch with some summer active member of the engineering staff. Both of the Texas schools mentioned have working tensil test labs.

The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them.
