Hi guys...I'm inquiring to see if anybody has any experience with oxygen systems (medical ventilators etc..) We've been selling a component to a medical equipment company for several years...with a Delrin (Acetal)seal (.12" dia.) that sees 100% Oxygen....I remember seeing somewhere that Delrin wasn't compatible...If it indeed isn't I've got to raise a flag here pretty quick. I've got a call into DuPont....if you have some documentation please pass it along. Thanks Guys |

Start here - https://plastics.dupont.com/plastics/pdflit/americas/delrin/230323c.pdf then check this out - https://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/20070005041_2006259419.pdf This document has a warning about Delrin and O2 - need to see what the issue is. https://www.modentic.com.tw/dltechnicalfile.php?technical_pdf_id=63 |

Thanks Kelly...I've got the 1st 2 links already. I'm browsing thru the DuPont stuff for a 3rd time. Still waiting for a response from Dupont. The 3rd link tells it all.. "Delrin is capable of handling extremely high pressure. Must not be used for oxygen service". This is not going to be pretty...building and selling an oxygen compatible product with non-compatible O2 component inside....since 1998....15000 products. I'm going to spend the day documenting my findings.

Marky,
I've been in similar situations in the past. Keep us posted on how it goes. Just be absolutely sure of your sources, your facts, and how they apply to your situation. Make sure everything you do would stand up in court. Could get ugly. Depends on how management wants to handle it. They probably won't give you a bonus for this! But you will be able to sleep at night. |

Thanks J....couldn't sleep last night. Just talked to the VP of Sales about....he laughed "WE'VE BEEN MAKING THESE THINGS FOR YEARS"....I told him it doesn't mean they've been right. I'll call DuPont again in a bit...we also have an overseas fabricator for these parts they've already said No Oxygen. Yes...documentation is the key. Stay tuned

My boss...."AHHH DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT....WE'VE BEEN DOING THAT FOR 30 YEARS".... Truly amazing....never mind the documentation...I'm searching the job sites. |

They're operating from the world of common sense - and it is! Changing now would be very costly. But I'll bet your corporate attorney wouldn't be quite so flippant about it. His world isn't based on common sense. Its based on judicial precedent - and common sense is not very common in that world. Once the first injury or damage claim occurs, it will not matter how long you've been using delrin. It will only matter that you shouldn't have. A wrong decision made 30 years ago is still a wrong decision. Documentation! |

Well, my instincts tell me that not using Delrin in a "high pressure Oxygen" is probable a permeability issue. I'm estimating that the oxygen will make way through the Delrin and enter the ambient equipment environment. A high concentration of pure oxygen in most environments is a bad idea. Now - I just am guessing that this is the issue. With this said, a recall may not in order, however going forward and improving the product by replacing the Delrin material with a more cost effective and safer material may be the smart business solution. I would encourage the company to investigate alternatives to Delrin in that quality, safety and costing may be improved. This should not be an issue for a responsible corporation. |

Good call Kelly...I've rejected several 100 pieces due to porosity. While my boss is flipping out over the mention of "Recall" I've been looking at alternate materials...KelF looks pretty good....DuPont is not very helpful. They sent me the same Dupont link that you did...and told me you can find it in here. I'm doing away with our overseas supplier and have a local company fabricating parts for us....I can control quality easier by banging on his door. |
