Hi,

I am an engineering student who is trying to use an accelerometer and gyroscope for a project. I'm not sure where to get started. I don't know to get the sensors to output readable data to a computer. Do I use a microcontroller? Is programming needed? How can the system of sensors be connected to the computer for display? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You would need to get those devices with the sensors already integrated. Probably TTL output, maybe 0-5v or 0-10v.

You may be able to find low cost Accelerometers depending on the range you need to cover. The ones used in cellphones to swap pages by quickly jerking the phone to one side to change screen displays may available via the surplus stores. Although having said that, they may just be an inertial switch.

The gyro will be something entirely different and much harder to find cheaply. You could try some aircraft surplus places and see if you can get one that no longer will meet certification.

Inputting the TTL signal into a computer could be done via the parallel port. Modern ones are bi-directional. Do some research on home built CNC milling machines and you may be able to buy a break out board that will handle all of the IO you need.

Also look at some free software called Mach3. It is CNC control software but it has a very user-configurable interface that you may be able to isolate the TTL inputs and outputs.

If you use a Micro-controller, yes you will need programming they don't just do stuff on their own. Do some searching on a "Basic Stamp." It is a small micro controller that is programmable easily and cheaply. They even have a USB driver for them now.

Maybe that can get you started in the right direction.

Dave
