I need help building a private access bridge across a 40 ft waterway. State guidelines require that the thickness between the top of the deck and the bottom of the beams not exceed 18". Due to the 4" Concrete slab and the 2" metal decking, the beam height can only be 12". What are the deminsions of the beams that I would need to support a 40 ft span, with support pillars on both ends that can hold 60,000 pounds. Can you help?? |

Hi Jenny, Had it been a 10' bridge I probably would have given you some ball-park figures, but at 40' I am with Marky. It is a Structural Engineer's job. You will need stressed beams for 60K-lbs and 40-feet. I am also not sure I understand the State Guidelines mandating an 18" thick max. bridge. Can you please point me to the State website and code that defines that. It seems a strange requirement. At 40' and 60K I seriously doubt it can be done economically within that 18". If that is a real restriction you may be able to apply for a variance to increase it a foot or so. Dave |
