Injection Molded Part-Cost of tight tolerances | |||

For injection molded parts, is there a rule of thumb or factor for the Cost vs. #of decimal places in your tolerance?

That depends.... On a lot of factors. Are you using a material that behaves well in the mold? Is the part design right? Is the process rigorously controlled? How tight is tight in your mind? Plis/minus .001 inch is fairly routine. |

I'm not sure about a rule of thumb with regard to tolerance significant figures, however, anytime you ask for a dimensional conformance which is at or beyond the natural process capability, the cost will go up. By process capability, I mean any manufacturing process. |
