can anybody give me a rough idea how many ft lbs of torque a 1 and half inch steel bar can withstand?? thank you |

The formulae is :- Torque (lb.ft) = allowable stress (psi) x Pi x D^3/16 /12 So for a 1.5" steel bar with a working allowable of 8000 psi you can safely transmit 442 lb.ft. If you have a step or other stress concentration in the shaft then the torque will have to be less by this factor (between 1 and 3 ?) Every mechanics textbook will give you the above info. |
