I have a .016" compression spring that I am compressing to its solid height. At its solid height its shear stress is 150,000 psi or about 50% of its ultimate strength and 65% of its yield strength. Does anyone know how to calculate the number of cycles to failure (1,000, 10,000, 100,000)? |

If you go to the following link at xxxxx (no links) you will find out how to determine if the spring will last "forever" or not. I made these calculations on a spring and found the R value to be -.25 but had the spring manufacturer (Century Spring) tell me that the spring will last 10,000 to 100,000 cycles. So, it is not below the Soderberg line but still has a long life. A shear strength of 150 ksi sounds very high, very high strength steels can also be brittle.
