Crankshaft balancing | |||

When balancing a crankshaft would I be counterweighting for the crank pin and its distance from center or weight of the crank pin plus connecting rod, wrist pin and piston? Thanks |

You want to counter the piston, rod and pin. On TDC your weights should be down. Hope this helps |

So to say that if my piston, rod, pin were to weigh ??oz's then the counter weight would weigh the same amount? I wonder this because the counter weight is closer to the center of rotation than the piston and pin.

Not exactly. We are not balancing the weight, but the force. The unbalanced force created by the pin, con rod and piston has to be calculated and it should be balanced by counter weights. The formula being F = M*R*W*W. W = rpm, R = Distance of the centre of mass of the counter weight from the crak shaft centre line. M = mass of counter weight. So the mass of the counter weight varies inversely proportional to the distance from centre line. |
