O-1 tool steel properties | |||

I am working on a design of a press where I am using O-1 tool steel. Due to the force used I am experiencing bending on this plate. I am using a 5/8" thick plate and looking into using a thicker plate. This O-1 is only annealed. I am also considering to submit this plate to oil hardening to increase strength. Will the hardening prevent the bending? Is their any table with material properties after it has been hardened? |

I think oil hardning is the wrong decision. It will make the tool stiffer and more sensitive. It may totally break then. In most cases tools are manufactured to have absolutely the best abilities of any material. It is very difficult for you to improve the properties of the tool. Hardening an already hardened and anealed tool is not very wise. [--I think that oil hardening is only used for surface hardening for mainly tribological reasons] Try to find a tool that suites you most or try out a thicker plate. |
