Anyone able to help me out on the appropriate times to use either a star vs a lock washer? I really don't see the advantage to ever using a star washer, but am open to suggestions... Very basically, would you recommend using a lock washer on a very hard surface and a star washer on a softer surface? thanks in advance... |

I would not consider either one. If the joint is properly designed the preload will not be eliminated and the fastener cannot turn. If the preload can be eliminated and the joint cannot be redesigned to prevent that, use a locking compound or a deformed thread fastener (either the internal or external thread. |
