Von Mises Stress in Composite FEA test | |||

Im doing a FEA test of a notched composite plate, iv been told to calculate Von Mises Stress primrarily. What is the advantage of finding Von Mises stress rather than, say max principal stress? Modified by cathal at Thu, Feb 03, 2005, 12:24:33 |

Ya, Von Mises theory holds good for ductile material. Also the theory has been found to give best results for materials which has both compressive and tensile strength values are same. For composite material say Thermoset polyester glass smc compressive and tensile stress values are around 100-300 Mpa. So, von mises theory will give BEST result. |

Maximum Principal Stress Theory gives good predictions for brittle materials but not for ductile materials. |
