I have 4 liters of water in a cylindrical container with inside diameter 4". The depth of 4L water in this container is 19.4". I need to drill a hole at bottom of container to let water drain out, but the maximum flow rate (at the beginning of draining) can not exceed 30 Liters per hour. Does anyone know the formula to calculate this opening ? I would greatly appreciate your help.

Hello yggj,

initial velocity will be V = sqr root (2g*H) eq- 1
volume flow rate = V * 3.14 *D *D / 4 eq -2

where D = dia of the hole...
H = height of the cylinder

steps:
(1) calc V
(2) use eq -2 to calc D

---------
