Machining Face Surfaces -- | |||

Question -- I have a spec requiring machined surface finish of 3.2um max on one item; and 12.5um max on another. Can someone please tell me how this converts to uin? Normally we just state '125rms' or '500rms' surface machining. Thanks,

Angi, 1 um = 1/40 uin Therefore, 3.12 um = 125 uin, and 12.5 um = 500 uin. Hope this helps. |

Thank you for your reply. It was very helpful. Can you also please tell me the definition of 'uin' and 'um'. I'm assuming uin is units in inches or something like that and um refers to metric units. I am trying to pass along this knowledge to my production department and don't want to stear them the wrong direction. Again, thanks so very much for your help. |

Angi, um = micro-meters (10E-6) uin = micro-inches (10E-6) The "u" should actually be the greek letter "mew", which is standard engineering symbol for "micro" (10E-6). Good luck. Take Care.
