What kind of failures are you experiencing? A lot of factors are to be considered to get max life for your cylinders besides just the rod material i.e. alingment, mounting, rod size too small for the load, fluid contamination. Maytag |

I understand why you want to increase the life of a piston rod. I am guessing you mean the kind that goes through a seal in a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder.
Hard chrome is done after HT. What material have you been using for the rods? Hard chrome stays on better if applied to a satin or fresh machine surface. I would have it done. Specify the thickness and polish or grind it to size. Only plan to remove a few tenths... (.0005") IT will last about as good as anything you can currently obtain. 4140 HT is a good material in many cases. ... and it is already heat treated when you get it to around 38RC. -randy- The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |
