I am currently looking to correct am ongoing problem I inherited. I have a machine in my shop that is used to "notch" samples for testing. The tool is nothing more than a hydraulic press that pushes a chisel point in a piece of metal to a prescribed distance. The current chisel is made of 4140 steel and flame hardened to 50+ RC. The points on these chisels are wearing much faster than I anticipate. Getting these tool made up is expensive and the down time is costing me. Should I go with a tool steel? There is no impact here, the chisel plows into the flat bar at about 10"/ min. The depth of the notch is 1/4". The material I'm notching is mild steel with a galvanized coating. Could someone recommend what type of steel to use here? Feel free to email me.

Yes, you need a tool steel, my thoughts are towards M1 heat treated to about RC53 to RC58. You need good edge wear resistance.
