Mounting End of Thompson Shaft

I need a good way to rigidly mount the end of a thompson shaft to a .375" plate, and secure the shaft in the mount. It is currently mounted in a 5x5x2" block with a set screw to hold it in place. The set screw does nothing against the round surface, and the 2" block doesn't do much for rigidity. The shaft basically sits in the block by its own weight.

I would like to machine the shaft to have a flat spot for the set screw to bare against. Or, even better, I'd like to be able to drill and tap a hole into the bottom of the shaft to keep it from bellow. Since these shafts are hardened from the outside I don't think either of these two ideas are easy or possible.

Does anyone know a proven method for this application?

Split the block from the bore out to one side. Then put a bolt through the block that intersects the split. Then the block becomes a clamp around the shaft when you tighten the new bolt. If the bore in the block is sized correctly this will hold securely.

Hey, that became a great idea. We'll use the existing block to maintain current positioning, and add a 1.5" clamp block to the top of it, using existing bolt holes. I think this will do exactly what I want.
