I have a steel helical gear that is cracking in assembly due to the press fit of the gear on the shaft. At MMC the press is .001". The gear is made from a powdered metal (MPIF FL-4605-140HT) and heat treated to 60HRC (micro identation). I would like to change the material to something like a 4140 or 8620 and heat treat it to 50-55HRC. This was a suggestion but I wanted to get more information and or other suggestions for material choices and heat treatments. |

Not knowing the size or application of your gear, the first suggestion that hits my mind is to use some kind of case hardening so the gear can be pressed over a shaft. Several materials will work well, but it depends on your size, load, wear factors and such. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |
