I need to calculate a cooling towers capacity and water consumption. I need some easily understood formulas. Can anyone help!

Kathryn:

By cooling tower capacity, do you mean its cooling capacity or its water flow capacity?

If you know the water flow entering the cooling tower and if you know temperature of the entering water and the leaving water, then the amount of cooling is:

Q, Btu/hr = (water flow, lbs/hr)(ΔT, °F)(sp.ht.)

where:
ΔT = Tentering - Tleaving
sp.ht. = specific heat of water = 1 Btu/lb/°F

As for the water consumption via evaporation, windage and blowdown, read my posting in this forum on 9/14/2005 at 21:06:31

If you don't know the water flow rate, you will have to either measure it or find the design specifications of the tower or contact the original manufacturer.

I apologise for Darchi not having been more helpful than he was.

Hi,

Apply conservation of Energy principle to the physical domain, with thermodynamic first and second law.
