We have a problem with a power house which contains 10 base load Diesel Generator Sets (1000kW). The DG Sets are quite old (20,000 hrs) and heat desipated by exhaust manifolds causes excessive heating inside the power house. inlet air temperature rise upto 65C and as a result the turbo charges get damaged and the machines cannot be loaded to their rated capacities. We are thinking of installing a duct line to bring in fresh air from out side directly to the air intake. Will this solve our problem or will it cause any harm to the turbo charges due to the possible suction pressure drop at air intake?? |

You need to exchange the air in the power house much more frequently. You could do this with forced draft fans or a chimney effect. In the chimney effect you would use a large diameter silo type chimney above the power gen-sets to allow the hot air to escape up, thus drawing fresh cooler air into the power house from closer to the ground. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |
