I have tried to determine the bending moment in a structure for hours now and I don´t know why I get the wrong answer all the time. I´d be really happy if someone could take a look at my solution. Maybe I have misunderstood something. Could someone also tell me how to proceed to get the maximum and minimum bending moment and the absolute value of the deflection of the beam? Thanks for your help and sorry for my english Edit: I forgot it in the drawing that the right side of the beam is simply supported Link to page one:

I see one immediate problem: your initial conditions are as follows: w(0) = 0, this is true because the slope of the beam at a fixed point is 0. w'(0) = 0, this is true because the deflection of the beam at a fixed point is 0. M(L) = w''(L) = 0, this is true because the moment of the beam at a pinned end is 0. w(L) = 0, this is *NOT* true because the slope at the pinned in is not 0. Did you mean to say that w'(L) = 0? That would be true, because the deflection at a pin is 0. I think if you went back and worked it this way you'd get the right answer. Let me know how it turns out... |

I finally managed to get the right answer! The solid mechanics part of it was correct but a had done some mistakes in my calculations. The two constants A and B were totally wrong. But thanks for your help anyway, I really appreciated it! Modified by Student_ at Thu, Oct 13, 2005, 01:46:42 |

did you notice the edited text that the drawing is wrong? The right side of the beam should be simply supported. |
