Gold price is back up... mining of gold is back as a profitable business. Leeching the gold from the ore is a refining process. Gold in tons of ore is of no scientific value to the electronics computer chip world but in the purest form it makes one heck of a good fine wire conductor. Important...? You bet, ... you need it to post to this forum. So in one small but important way it is what drives the growth of technology in itself, a feeding cycle of technology driving technology growth. But, ... it must be refined to a pure form to make it happen. (Just as this forum is one more way to increase the exchange of engineering data, data being refined as we learn together.) The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. NDR: I just want to point out that a refinery does much more than just remove impurities. For example, a petroleum refinery receives crude oil extracted from underground wells and processes that crude oil to produce a wide variety of products (i.e., LPG, gasoline, kerosene, diesel oil, fuel oil, asphalt, coke, etc.). As another example, a sugar refinery starts with a raw material such as sugar cane or sugar beets and produces various grades of sugar from those raw materials. Milt Beychok

Some impurities are also products. For example, sulfuric acid can be made from natural gas purification. For a long time, coke was classified as waste, but now is a valuable commodity. D Willers |
