Here's an easy one. Is 18-8 s.s. the same material as 304 s.s.? |

Hi
Almost the same. They are basically different nominations. 18 is the Chromium percentage, and 8 the Nickel. 304 or 18-8 is mostly used for utensils, food industry equipment, moderately corrosion-resistant process plant equipment, etc., where severe corrosion risk and high temperatures are not present. If we lower the carbon percentage, which causes improvement to weldability and corrosion resistance, we can have 304L (Low carbon)or 304 ELC (Extra Low Carbon), certainly more expensive. By adding 2% of Molybdenium, we can have 316 with better mechanical and thermal propoerties. In DIN standard, 304 is called 1.4301, and 316 is 1.4401. For high temperatures (above 400-500 C), types 309 (1.4828), 310 (1.4841) or 321 (1.4641) may be used. They contain some percents of Ti, V, W, and other refractory elements which enhance their thermal resistance. Regards

They are approximately the same. 18-8 is a commercial loose controlled designation, and 304 is more specific regarding material composition. What is your application? |

18-8 refers to a chemical composition
18% minimum chromium content 8 % minium nickel content. 304 is an actual material grade to ASTM standards. It probably does specify minimum contents of chromium and nickel of near enough 18 and 8 %. The material grade will also specify contents of other alloying elements and mechanical requirements, amongst other requirements.
