I am going to remove a couple of wooden post on the side of my barn and need to support the roof with a steel I-beam. I do not know how to calculate the size I-beam I need. The span will be 28 ft, supported at each end. One of the 6x6 columns supports will be inset at 4 ft. the other at the end of the beam
Total load will be less that 25,000 Lbs equally dispersed. I can have up to a 3-4 inch deflection without causing any problems. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
Cecil

A W10x49 beam should do the trick with not much deflection. I must caution you, however, that working with loads like that requires great caution and you must adequately brace the beam, especially at the supports.
