HI ALL..
This is very simple question..
But if you given object with same share , tensile & compretion stresses ( this is ideal condition & not possible practicaly)
On which criteria of stress you are going to design tha same?

depends on what u designing it for?
everything has stress, it depends on whats causing the stress, tensile and compression loads cause stress just in a different manner.
may be the question you need to be asking your self is, "HOW IS IT GOING TO FAIL", that should answer your question on which kind of stress you need to look at.
