Hello everyone!! I am new to these forums but they appear to be a good source of information for the future. I am attaching some 304SS Thermocouple pads and nuts to a turbine shell that is made of ASTM A-356 Grade 9. I am only wanting to put some tack welds to hold these in place. I do not have the specific specifications on the ASTM A-356 Grade 9 material but I have been told that it is most likely a 9% Chrome Alloy (P5B)material. 1) Does anyone have experience with the ASTM A-356 material and know the specifications or P number of this material?

First.. I am not an expert.
However, I have had excellent results many times welding most metals to a stainless using 308-16 welding rod. This rod sucks the heat up the rod well and doesn't need much current to do the job.. lays well in most any direction.. sticks to the product well... builds quickly. Thanks Randy!! I have used Inconel 182 many time for Stainless to Crome alloy welds and I have had a very good sucess rate. That is what I am leaning towards I just wanted some other opinions.

The selection of the filler metal alloy for welding stainless steels is based on the composition of the particular alloy.
Various stainless steel filler metal alloys are normally available as covered electrodes and as bare solid wires. Recently flux-cored electrode wires have been developed for welding stainless steels. Filler metal alloy for welding the various stainless steel base metals are: Cr-Ni-Mn (AISI No. 308); Cr-Ni-Austenitic (AISI No. 309, 310, 316, 317, 347); Cr-Martensitic (AISI No. 410, 430); Cr-Ferritic (AISI No. 410, 430, 309, 502). I don't knoiw about any others. It is possible to weld several different stainless base metals with the same filler metal alloy. I sure you want to match your filler material to you base metal. BTW, you can specifiy a filler-less weld. THis is normally done to prevent any kind of contaminants entering the weld. Have you talked with a welding engineer?
