Hi all i am new to this forum,i am having one question.
If you place an egg on floor in verticle position and apply load on the top the egg wont break could any explain this? |

Great point! Another example would be an empty aluminum cola can. It will support my weight (~200#) along the central axis. If I lay it on its side, it colapses with very little load. (2 #?) |

I realy don't want to be a hard time, however I don't think your question is worded as you may have intended. If you apply a enough load, the egg will break... I suspect your question realy is; why will an egg support more weight (load) when loaded perpendicular to the narrow cross section? |

If your question is as Mr. Bramble states it, then the answer is that the shell material is better suited to compression than bending. With a load along the longitudinal axis of the egg, the bending stresses are less than the compressive stresses and vice versa. |
