I am a researcher at UCLA working on fluid dynamic experiment.
I am currently designing a new experiment for wich I need to oscillate a spherical container full of water. The diameter is roughly 12". I need to oscillate this sphere around a reference angular position. The amplitude of the oscillation varies between 6 to 60 deg with a frequency ranging from 30-200 oscillations/minute. I need a good resolution on the angular displacement (<1%) and on the frequency (<1%). I first thought using brushless servo motor that I would feed with a sinusoidal analog input signal in velocity mode, but for the 6 deg displacement it will be hard to match the resolution. So I finally decided to go with a constant rotation rate of the motor (easy to achieve) and a articulated arms design to transform the constant rotation motion into a linear oscillation and from there into a angular oscillation of the sphere. Eventhough the concept is very simple and very old (remember the wheels of the old trains) such a system require some deep thinking. I thought it may exist commercial devices on the market. Do anybody know about that ? thanks a lot, Jerome.

How much is the radious of the movement?? How much is the own weight of the spherical container. |

the radius is pretty flexible within 5-20cm and the weight will be around 2-3kg (dry) 15kg (full of water). |
