I'm an instructor of commercial damage estimating, not a PE, and our class is trying to determine the way to identify S vs W shapes. I thought it was just that W shapes were closer in ratio of web to flange of 1:1, but we're finding shapes of 8" height and 4" flange or width in both tables. Is it simply that the S shapes have a tapered flange and the W shapes are "regular"? Thanks Dan |

Pretty much the dimensional size of the shape cross section is the best way. I agree that a quick way is the tapered flange on the s shapes. S shapes are also noticably thinner than W shapes. |
