HELP! PLEASE! I'm trying to find a seal washer with the elastomer bonded to the outside of the metal washer. I just can't find one available anywhere, does anyone know of a place I might be able to source such a washer. We are trying to seal a bolt inside a product contact area and need to confrom to 3-A standards. I have attached a sketch of what I mean.   MiGUEL

I don't know but, have you tried and is it acceptable to place an o-ring around a small diameter washer in such a way as to be compressed by the bolt head and work surface in this application? The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them.

I keep telling my bosses the same and they look at me funny. Unfortunatley when the o'ring is compressed it would leave a small crap trap under it and would not be able to be cleaned inside a machine by using conventional CIP (clean in place) techniques. That is a spray ball or nozzle to effectively flush out the guts of the machine. For some applications you can get away with it, but we are aiming at FDA approval which is pretty stritct. Although, your idea makes me think about using a gasket instead of an o'ring...hmmm! Thanks mate! MiGUEL

Teflon washers are our backup plan. What were looking at doing is machining a custom bolt with a step machined into the undeside so that a teflon washer can be placed under the bolt and when the bolt is tightened it bottoms out on the inner step which is how you can control the amount of compression of the teflon washer. Its a good solution, but more expensive than we wanted. MiGUEL

In the aircraft industy, many similar type fittings are designed opposite of you are looking for. Instead of having an elastomer with a compression stop, a counterbored feature is designed into the mating part. The counterbore is a the right depth to control the compression exerted on the oring after assembly.
