Entropy is a quantitative measure of the energy in a closed system that is not available to do work. If you have a battery operated toy in a completely closed and absolutely insulated bottle at absolute zero the chemical energy of the battery will be all the energy available (ignoring the ambient energy and the fact that batteries don't work at absolute zero) and there will be no "entropy". When you turn the toy on the chemical energy of the battery will convert to electrical energy which will convert to kinetic energy of the toy which will convert to heat energy of friction... In the end all of the energy will be converted to it's lowest state and none will be available to work the toy. The bottle will still contain the same amount of energy but entropy has increased until it is equal to the amount of energy originally contained in teh battery.

thank u vishy i got the concept of entropy.that u for giving such a clear explanation. visy what is mr.zekshen saying about that the units are wrong.i didn't get his arguemnt.u didn't mentioned anywhere the units.is its he opposing that u told it is a quantitative measure energy.he is saying about the units of energy. anywhere i understand the concept very clearly. thank u vishy. thank u very much. Vishy, Your explanartion is good but I think you have your units wrong; the units of entropy are BTU/lb/R in english units R in degrees
