I have the following situation - Diesel fuel is travelling through a pipeline at a pressure of 350kPa from a tank that is open to atmosphere, when a valve at each end of the pipe closes. The temperature of the diesel in the pipe is at 20 degrees. The pipe is heated to 70 degree. The diesel is now in a set volume (due to the closure of the valves). How do I calculate the pressure increase of the diesel? |

With a fixed volume and a temperature rise in the liquid, you should see a pressure increase. What you realy need is a temperature - pressure curve of diesel. I know there is a equation to solve for temperature and pressure with steady volume, however I simply do not remember it. You can measure the change in pressure due to temp. by installing a pressure gage within the system in question. Modified by Kelly Bramble at Thu, Aug 10, 2006, 20:32:02 |

This is a design concept at the moment, so I can not messure the pressure. |

Is the diesel "Pumped" thru the pipeline or does it Gravity flow from the storage tank ? If it is gravity fed, the pressure when the valve is closed would be based on the liquid height of the tank. If pumped, you need more info. (ie, is pump turned off prior to valve closure or after, etc.) Scooter |

The diesel is pumped from the storage tank, and the operating pressure is 350kPa. The isolation valves are linked to the pump motor and they close at the same time as the pump stopping. |
